Public education in Uptown is provided by the award-winning Dallas Independent School District (DISD). The district is huge, encompassing more than 250 campuses and 150,000 students. Uptown residents generally feed into Milam Elementary, Houston Elementary, Rusk Middle School and North Dallas High School. The William B. Travis Academy, a magnet school, is located in Uptown.

Neighborhoods in Uptown include Cityplace, LoMac, State Thomas and West Village. Cityplace is anchored by the Cityplace Tower, a 43-story commercial office building on North Haskell Avenue. The tower is Dallas’ tallest building outside Downtown. LoMac is an unofficial name designating the stretch of McKinney Avenue between Oak Grove and Woodall Rodgers Freeway. South and east of LoMac is Uptown’s State Thomas historic district, with its relatively large collection of Victorian homes. Lastly, the West Village neighborhood is probably Uptown’s most up-and-coming community. Apartments and lofts provide convenient living options, while the Village’s extensive retail, dining and entertainment venues provide for everything else.

Other neighborhoods in the vicinity include Knox Park and Turtle Creek. Knox Park is located north of Cityplace, traversed by the Katy Trail. The Turtle Creek neighborhood surrounds Turtle Creek Boulevard at the north end of Uptown. The name Turtle Creek is sometimes used casually to refer to all of Oak Lawn, the larger community that includes Uptown.

Museums, galleries and performing arts venues are plentiful in Uptown. Larger arenas like the Dallas Theater Center and Kitchen Dog Theater complement the smaller playhouses like Theatre Too. The Magnolia Theatre in West Village, a movie house, gives independent films a stage in Dallas; the schedule includes screenings from local filmmakers, film panels and discussions.
